Several years ago I started sending out daily email Chore List reminders to myself. Yep. You read that right. I started talking to myself in email. I knew if I received an email about it, I might actually do it. A number of people joined me in the endeavor and it worked great … until I got burnt out and stopped sending out the notices.
We discovered, however, that by combining all those daily Chore Lists into four different Weekly Chore Lists, the lists could be printed out each week, hung on the fridge or taped inside a cupboard, and then checked off as each item was accomplished. Surprisingly, this was a successful idea for lots of folks (including me … until I got overwhelmed with schoolwork).
Sensing a theme, here? I do pretty well at various housekeeping systems until … well, until I don’t. 😉 Usually because I get overwhelmed with life.
Now that I have some time off from schoolwork and deadlines, I thought I’d pull out those trusty old Chore Lists again and see if I can make them work for me in this new season of life. They (who are they?) say that it takes about four to six weeks to build a new habit. So if I start plugging away at getting in the habit of each day using the Chore List, maybe … just maybe … I’ll build a new habit into my life before September rolls around again. Besides, having everything printed out on one sheet of paper makes it so I only have to build the habit of checking the list and doing what it says. I don’t have to build the habit of each individual chore. That’d take me forever, I’m afraid.

You don’t have to wait until the beginning of the week to start, either. If it’s Wednesday, just start in with Wednesday’s chores and don’t worry about the earlier days. The chores will come around again next week. Don’t try to get “caught up.” Start where ever you are in the week. You’re never behind. Really!
And if you don’t want to follow these Chore Lists, no worries. Do whatever works for you. I’m easy. This blog is a Nag Free Zone. 🙂
